We talked to Frank Adam, managing director, auditor and tax consultant, to gain an exclusive insight into bws Graf Kanitz GmbH. We discussed the origins and development of the company, the advantages and disadvantages of digitalisation and the aims of effective consulting.

Mr. Adam, would you briefly introduce yourself and the company bws Graf Kanitz?

Yes, with pleasure. We are a medium-sized consulting company with a long tradition: bws Graf Kanitz GmbH is in its current form, the result of the merger of several individual law enterprises, some of which have been present on the market for more than 50 years. In our role as a medium-sized service company, our focus is on auditing and consulting for medium-sized companies – primarily in the southern and central area of Baden-Württemberg.

Our development has accelerated, especially in recent years. In this context, I am not only thinking about our organic growth, but also about market conditions that are changing with increasing speed. For example, the demand for the services of our international tax department is growing continuously, which reflects the increasing international orientation of our clients. Of course, another aspect is increasing digitalisation, which has enabled us to expand our client base beyond the regional borders.

How has bws Graf Kanitz developed since its foundation?

Does this mean that the company is increasingly acquiring clients outside the region?

Definitely. In our experience, regional location is becoming less important. Instead, specific expertise and specialist knowledge is the reason for increasing demand, even within our circle of colleagues. The majority of our mandates arises from our network of tax consultants and lawyers.
Now back to your core question: Digitalisation enables us to offer our services nationwide – this is of course a great step in the direction of progress.

Digitalisation is both an enrichment and a challenge: Today’s employees have to do a lot of extra work. It is not enough to have relevant skills in your business, you also need IT-skills.
Fields of activity such as financial accounting and payroll accounting are increasingly dominated by IT-related issues.
However, despite all the challenges, digitalisation is also a blessing – both for us as a company and for our clients. Digitilised processes are timesaving and cost-effective – an advantage for both parties.

Let us focus on digitalisation and progress. How has digitilisation changed the work processes in your company?

What services does bws Graf Kanitz offer and how would you describe your client base?

We offer the whole range of auditing and consulting services relevant for medium-sized companies in the private or public sector, whereby our focus is on family-held enterprises. If I named some of the focuses of our range of services, I would highlight our international tax consulting as well as our support performance in Mergers and Acquisitions, transactions and reorganization. . This is mainly due to the different backgrounds of our partners and professionals, which are harmoniously integrated into a large whole.

In this regard, a frequently used quotation from former German Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl comes to mind: “The decisive factor is what comes out at the end!” Ultimately, the aim is to accomplish a benefit for our clients by providing services, whose value is greater than the price they pay to us.

Consultancy services are a significant part of your daily business, especially for you. Therefore, the question is: How would you define “effective consulting”?

To sum up: The goal of effective consulting is ultimately a profitable benefit?

Yes, you could say that. The special thing about consulting is of course individuality. Every question of benefit requires a highly individual answer. While one person focuses on risk minimisation or planning security, the other focuses on maximising the chances of earnings. The individual definition of benefit lies in the eye of the client. In addition, in many cases the question of a profitable benefit can only be answered after a few years. It is often better to accept short-time pain, such as tax burdens, in favour of long-term benefits. Our aim therefore, is to accomplish a benefit that is long term and as sustainable as possible. It is important to avoid the risk of the benefit turning into a disadvantage later on.

Communication is essential in any consulting activity. There is no good consulting without open, honest and clear communication. It is a matter of common knowledge that tax advice often requires a lot of explanation. We have made it our mission to convey specialist content in a comprehensible and understandable manner to our clients. Only in this way is communication at eye level possible.

How important is effective communication between consultant and client for a successful cooperation?

Today, there are a range of possibilities for client acquisition – not least, through the unlimited possibilities of social media. How are new clients made aware of bws Graf Kanitz?

It is indeed the case that new customers find their way to us primarily through recommendations – for us, of course , that is the greatest compliment,. Nevertheless, we decided some time ago to enter the world of social media. This is simply part of progress and opens up new possibilities– not only in customer acquisition, but especially in the process of recruiting. Since we are also active in the training of colleagues in our specialist areas, we are receiving an increasing number of inquiries via social media.

The answer is already in the question. The contents of activities are so different depending on the area of application that a general answer is not possible. Of course, the daily activities of our employees in the service area (financial accounting and payroll accounting) are characterized by routine and I am very grateful that we have team members who appreciate such activities.
As far as my job is concerned, I can say that there is no typical daily routine. For me personally, this is perhaps the best part of the whole thing.

Consulting, auditing, financial accounting: The field of activity at bws Graf Kanitz is versatile. Is there a typical working day in your firm?

Suppose you ask a client to describe bws Graf Kanitz in three words. How would that description turn out?

A good question. Let me think about it. I would say familial , innovative, proactive.
A reliable partner who is always ready to listen, has innovative ideas and always acts goal-oriented.
